As a meter reader, you will be responsible for visiting residential, commercial, and industrial properties to record utility consumption data that customers and suppliers rely on for billing and resource management. You will travel throughout assigned territories, locating meters for gas, water, electricity, and other utilities, then accurately documenting the readings you observe. Your work involves careful attention to detail, as even small reading errors can result in incorrect billing for customers and suppliers alike. You will examine meter conditions, identify signs of damage or tampering, and report any faults or irregularities to your employer for further investigation. Beyond simply recording numbers, you serve as a critical link in the utility supply chain, ensuring transparent and accurate metering information flows between providers and consumers. This role offers independence and outdoor work, though it requires reliability, punctuality, and the ability to navigate safely through various neighborhoods and facilities.

- Locate and access meters in residential and commercial properties following provided routes and schedules
- Read electricity meters accurately and record consumption values in digital or paper-based systems
- Read gas and water meters with precision, noting all displayed values and consumption data
- Document readings systematically and transmit data to suppliers and billing departments in timely manner
Equipment Inspection and Fault Detection
- Examine meter connections and installations to ensure they are properly functioning and securely attached
- Identify signs of corrosion, damage, or tampering on meters and report issues to management
- Recognize faults in utility meters such as spinning, stuck indicators, or abnormal readings
- Report meter malfunctions and suspicious activity to appropriate utility company departments for investigation
Navigation and Route Management
- Operate GPS systems and mobile applications to navigate assigned reading routes efficiently
- Plan routes to optimize time and coverage while ensuring no properties are missed or duplicated
- Recognize street signs, traffic signals, and follow road traffic laws and safety regulations while traveling
- Access various property types including residential, commercial, and industrial sites while maintaining personal safety
Data Management and Reporting
- Report utility meter readings accurately to the utility company and billing departments
- Maintain detailed records of all readings, dates, times, and any anomalies discovered
- Input data into billing systems and ensure accuracy for customer invoicing and supplier accountability
